For Marshall H. Sager, D.O., D.A.B.M.A., F.A.A.M.A., the 1980’s was a time of changes and new beginnings.

After practicing medicine in suburban Philadelphia for 25 years, Dr. Sager sold his general medical practice, moved to Philadelphia’s Main Line and, most significantly, changed his profession. Yes, he still practices medicine, but he evolved from traditional Family Medicine to the complementary and alternative specialties of Medical Acupuncture, Homeopathy and Herbs.

Dr. Sager earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Lehigh University. Following graduate work at Temple University, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1967. Dr. Sager completed his post-graduate training in Medical Acupuncture at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1990. He is Board Certified in Medical Acupuncture by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture, a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and a Diplomate of The American Academy of Clinical Homeopathy.

Dr. Sager is a past President of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), a national association of physician acupuncturists and is the Founding President of its Pennsylvania Chapter. He is Founding Chair and Member of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture (ABMA) and Board Member of the International Congress of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques (ICMART) and Chair of its Education Committee.

Dr. Sager is a sought after national and international speaker. He has been a Clinical Preceptor for the UCLA “Medical Acupuncture for Physicians” program and is a frequent lecturer on Medical Acupuncture and Complimentary and Alternative Medicine for diverse medical schools, hospitals, community and charitable organizations.

A sports enthusiast, Dr. Sager has been the Medical Acupuncture Physician for the Philadelphia Flyers, including Eric Lindros, Kjell Samuelsson and Paul Coffey, and Philadelphia Phantoms professional hockey teams and professional tennis stars, including Pat Rafter.

What is Homeopathy?
More than 200 years old and time tested, Homeopathy is a system of medicine which has proven safe and effective and delivers fast, verifiable results. Homeopathy is a natural, holistic and complete system of medical diagnosis and treatment, known to the ancient Greeks, and made popular in the late 1700’s by German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).

The word, “Homeopathy,” comes from the Greek word, “homois,” meaning like or similar and “pathos” meaning disease or suffering. Homeopathic remedies stimulate, strengthen and encourage the body’s own healing processes to fight illness and cure disease.

While many people confuse homeopathic products with “herbal,” “natural” or “holistic” products, Homeopathy is not necessarily any of these. Homeopathy is distinguished because its therapeutic effect is explained by the “Laws of Similars and Infinitesimals.”

The Laws of Similars and Infinitesimals
Dr. Hahnemann discovered that a toxic substance which induces specific symptoms in a healthy person could be used to cure a sick person with the same symptoms. This led to the “Law of Similars,” the basic principle of Homeopathy. Dr. Hahnemann determined that substances which, at full strength, were toxic and would cause specific unwanted reactions in a healthy person would, when extremely diluted, cure a patient experiencing those same symptoms. He discovered that highly diluted substances provided safe and fast results and promoted healing rather than harming. This was Dr. Hahnemann’s minimal dosage rule, called the Law of Infinitesimals.

Homeopathy in the United States
In the early 1800’s and continuing through the mid-20th century, many homeopathic medical schools, hospitals, pharmacies and clinics, such as Hahnemann Medical School and Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, existed throughout the United States.

The development of bio-pharmacology (drug therapy) in the first part of the 20th century effectively curtailed the spread of Homeopathy throughout our country, while it continued to be taught and practiced extensively throughout Europe and England. The later part of the 20th century saw the revival of Homeopathy in the USA, as adverse drug reactions and undesirable drug side effects became more prevalent. Many people have discovered that Homeopathy offers a kinder, gentler and more natural alternative to pharmaceuticals.
